CONFLICT, NEGOTIATION AND PERSPECTIVE-TAKING

The book Conflict, Negotiation & Perspective-Taking is authored by Sandra and based to a great extent on her own field-based research and key opinion leaders in academic negotiation research. The book advocates a constructive, grounded attitude toward conflict, and recommend negotiation as the preferred approach for productively handling the outcomes of disputes. Both the nature of conflict as well as important features of negotiation are extensively described. Various negotiation competences are explained, where interpersonal perspective-taking occupies a prominent position. We advocate perspective-taking as a superior competency to effectively understand the points of view of others.

The unique combination of the three central themes presented in this book: conflict, negotiation, and interpersonal perspective-taking, provide different important insights concerning the handling of disputes and the practice of negotiation. In-depth understanding of these themes, in combination with supervised training, enables the negotiator to forge a “three-dimensional” instrument for effective conflict management. In addition, perspective-taking can serve to structure a beneficial outcome to a conflict, attain sustainable solutions, and develop healthier relationships.

Professor Roland Reichenbach from Zürich University, Switzerland, has contributed with a chapter with a theoretical discussion on advanced negotiation strategies and negotiation research models that concludes the book.

In sum, Conflict, Negotiation & Perspective-Taking can empower the reader to seek win-win solutions in conflict situations, which in turn will increase his or her influence, and enhance harmonious and productive working environments. Although this work primarily addresses professional contexts, the principles and their applications are highly useful for everyday situations.
